impression that technical virtuosity has become the servant of exhibitionism.
A curious detail is the D on the third beat of Measure 1, in conflict with the rhythm section s G Flat 9th. Why does this sound consonant? Is it because, played staccato, it is too brief for the contrast to be conspicuous? Is it because the D could be inĀterpreted as part of a G Flat Augmented 7th?
